Just a day after their impressive victory against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu, Carlo Ancelotti and the entire Real Madrid squad have reason to celebrate. An unexpected piece of news emerged this Sunday in La Liga.
The new week is set to start on a positive note for the Madridistas. Having regained their winning form with a convincing 4-0 win over Osasuna on Saturday, an unexpected twist unfolded on Sunday with FC Barcelona. Previously, Barcelona held a solid lead in the league with a nine-point advantage over Real Madrid (who still have a game in hand against Valencia). However, Hansi Flick’s team suffered a defeat away at Anoeta this Sunday against Real Sociedad.
A defeat that benefits Real

Coming off a streak of seven consecutive wins across all competitions, including two major victories over Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Real Madrid just a few days ago, Barça stumbled against Kubo’s team. Although the match was marred by a glaring VAR error, where a Robert Lewandowski goal was disallowed for what appeared to be a marginal, if not non-existent, offside, this loss benefits Carlo Ancelotti’s side, bringing them to within six points of first place with a game in hand.
While the Madrid squad seems to be finding answers to the issues that had previously prevented convincing results, Barcelona’s defeat reopens discussions. After just 13 league matches, Madridistas can remain confident that their rivals will slip up further as the season progresses. On Sunday against Sociedad, the Catalans didn’t register a single shot on target.
For a team that has consistently scored this season and is being touted as back in full force on the European stage, there’s clearly still work to be done. Today, Florentino Pérez and his colleagues must focus on solidifying the defence to enable the team to deliver robust defensive performances. With Vinícius in top form and Kylian Mbappé likely to make a strong comeback with goals, Real can still aim for the Liga title this season.
If Madrid win their rescheduled match against Valencia from matchday 12, they would close the gap to just three points behind first place. At the end of this round, Real Madrid stand on 27 points from 12 matches played, while Barça have 33 points after 13 matches.
